50 Years of AMG will be the title of an exclusive special show at the 50th Essen Motor Show. In Hall 3, several top-class vehicles will illustrate the history of the sports car make from Mercedes-Benz.
In 1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded AMG as an engineering office for the design and development of racing engines. Today, the make is regarded as a synonym for high-quality performance road vehicles and successes in motorsports. Two AMG cars will take centre stage in the special show at the performance festival in Essen: the 300 SEL 6.8 from 1971 and the current Mercedes-AMG GT3.
In 1971, AMG scored a particular coup with the 300 SEL luxury saloon and this made the firm world-famous. In the 24-hour race in Spa, the vehicle which weighed 1.6 tonnes, had red paintwork and was driven by Clemens Schickentanz and Hans Heyer took second place on the roller coaster track in the Ardennes. AMG had enhanced the power of the engine from 250 bhp to 420 bhp and this permitted a top speed of 265 km/h. The success was all the more astonishing because Mercedes-Benz had intended to enter three works 300 SELs in Spa in 1969 but the cars had to withdraw due to tyre problems. The red AMG car was quickly nicknamed the "Red Pig".
The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is the current racing sports car with which Mercedes's customer teams compete in the fiercely contested GT3 class, amongst others, against vehicles from Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW and Porsche. The car has a 6.3-litre V8 engine which is installed at the front and manages approx. 550 bhp. The vehicle weight is approx. 1,285 kg. Teams such as Black Falcon, Haribo Racing Team or HTP-Motorsport start, amongst other competitions, in the Blancpain series, the ADAC GT Masters, the races for the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and 24-hour races. In 2016 for example, the AMG GT3 with Bernd Schneider, Maro Engel, Adam Christodoulou and Manuel Metzger won the overall classification in the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring and took second place in the 24-hour race in Spa.
Other Vehicles in the Special Show (Selection): Mercedes 450 SLC AMG "Mampe", Mercedes 300 E 5.6 AMG "The Hammer", Mercedes 190 EVO II AMG DTM ex Klaus Ludwig, Mercedes CLK AMG DTM ex Marcel Fässler, Mercedes SLK AMG V8, Mercedes SLS AMG GT Final Edition.
